Stomp! Volunteers pack snow piles into cubes for Winter Carnival carving contests

All the tightly packed white stuff used for St. Paul Winter Carnival’s snow-carving competitions has to come from somewhere.

On Saturday, volunteers received snow load after snow load during the “Snow Stomp” at the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Vulcan Snow Park at the Minnesota State Fair grounds.

Snow was loaded into 8 x 8 x 8 foot cubes and compressed in preparation for the carving contests later in the week.

The effort is set to go on all weekend as the Vulcans aim to build 23 blocks for 15 professional carving teams and 8 amateur teams.
