Matt Chatelle’s career had a picture perfect ending.
Three days after helping lead Austin Prep to a Division 3 state championship, Chatelle captured an MBCA Senior All-Star Game MVP as courtesy of two hits and three RBI, the North All-Stars defeated the South All-Stars, 8-1, on Tuesday night at Monan Park in Dorchester.
Along with Chatelle, Xaverian’s Matt Brinker was named Most Valuable Player from the South while Collin Ensminger (Reading) and Thomas Shurtleff (Medfield) were named the games most valuable pitchers.
“It was really cool to come out here in a great environment alongside some good baseball players,” Chatelle said. “It was just a great time overall.”
Brinker for his part also collected a pair of hits including a booming double. Shurtleff threw a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game for the South All-Stars while Ensminger (Reading) fired three zeroes throughout the middle portion. Chatelle (Merrimack), Brinker (Northeastern), and Shurtleff (Pennsylvania) are all set to continue their careers at the Division 1 collegiate level while Ensminger will pitch at Worcester State.
“I am glad I got the invite to be around so many talented guys,” Shurtleff said. “It was a great way to finish the year and my high school career and it was a lot of fun.”
After the sides traded zeroes through the first five innings, the North All-Stars broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth when Ty Wilson (Lynn Classical) and Evan O’Rourke (Arlington) crossed the plate. The South All-Stars cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh when Jonathan St. Ange doubled and scored from second on a Shurtleff infield hit.
The North All-Stars broke the game open for good in the top of the eighth as Chatelle crushed a two run double down the left field line as part of a four run frame that put the visitors on top 6-1.
